What a grid drawing worksheet is for
The grid method has one job: it turns a whole picture into a set of small squares, and a small square is something a child, a beginner or a distracted adult can copy without being overwhelmed by the whole. On a worksheet the grid does that job twice. The reference picture wears a grid, the blank sheet wears the same grid, and the student carries the contents of A1 into A1, B1 into B1, one square at a time. Nobody is asked to judge whether a face looks right. They are asked whether a curve enters cell C4 a third of the way down its left edge, which is a question with an answer.
That is why the two grids have to match exactly, and why this maker works in real millimetres and inches rather than in pixels. A one-inch cell on the sheet is one inch when it comes out of the printer, a 2 cm cell is 2 cm, and a class of thirty gets thirty identical sheets. The reference to go with it comes from the image grid generator, which puts the same lettered and numbered grid over any photograph.
Which cell size for which class
The cell should be about the size of the smallest thing a student has to get right. For the first lessons that is a big thing: a 1-inch cell gives a 7 × 8 grid on Letter, 56 squares, which a class finishes in one sitting and which forgives a wobbly line. Once the method is understood, halve the cell. A half-inch or 1.25 cm cell gives four times the squares and asks for four times the looking, and it is where likeness starts to appear in portraits.

The counts in the table assume the default half-inch (12.7 mm) margin with the coordinate band and the name line switched on. Take the name line off and you gain a row; narrow the margin and you gain more. The maker tells you the count as you change the settings, so there is no arithmetic left to do at the photocopier.
Coordinates, and why the letters matter
Letters across the top and numbers down the side turn every square into an address. A student who is lost says "C4" instead of pointing, a teacher checking work says "look at F2 on both sheets", and a pair working together can compare squares without reaching across the desk. Switch the coordinates on for any sheet that will be talked about, and off for a sheet that is going to be drawn on freely and kept.
The mirrored variant runs the letters from right to left. Give the reference a normal grid and the sheet a mirrored one, and the student has to draw the picture flipped, square by square, which is the most direct exercise there is for seeing shapes instead of things. The rotated variant puts the letters down the side and the numbers across, so a reference held sideways still matches. Half cells add dashed midlines inside every square for the student who needs a finer target in one lesson without changing the whole grid.
The pages a lesson needs
The PDF is one sheet, and the printer makes the copies: a class of thirty prints it thirty times. Two things can be added to it. Pair work adds the same sheet mirrored, with the letters running right to left, so one partner draws the picture and the other draws it flipped, and they check each other square by square. And a reference picture can go in as the first page, cropped to the grid and carrying the same grid and the same coordinates, so the sheet and the picture match square for square without a second tool. The picture is cropped to the shape of the grid; change the cell count to change the crop.
The link under the preview carries every setting. Paste it into a lesson plan, a class page or a message to a colleague, and whoever opens it sees exactly this grid and can print it themselves. The picture is not in the link: it stays on the device it was chosen on, and nothing is uploaded or saved on our side.
Printing at true size
A PDF prints at the size on the page only if the printer is told not to scale it. In the print dialog choose "Actual size" or set the scale to 100 percent, never "Fit to page", which shrinks the sheet by a few percent and turns a one-inch cell into a 24-millimetre one. After the first sheet comes out, lay a ruler across one cell. If it measures what the maker says, print the rest. If it does not, the dialog is scaling. The same rule applies to the reference printed from the image grid generator, and the two only match on paper if both were printed unscaled.
The PNG is for the whiteboard or the projector: the same sheet as an image at 300 dots per inch, so it stays sharp when it is projected large behind you while the class works on paper.
What the worksheet teaches, and what it does not
A grid teaches seeing in relationships. Where does this line enter the square, where does it leave, how far along the edge, how much of the square is dark. Those are the questions a trained eye asks without a grid, and the grid makes them explicit until the habit takes. It does not teach shading, colour, composition or invention, and a student who only ever copies through a grid will draw accurately and stiffly. Use it for the placement pass, then take it away.
