The GridMyPic toolkit

There is one tool: you drop in a photo and get a grid you can draw from. What changes is the job around it — a canvas needs its own measurements, a mural needs several sheets, a finished drawing needs checking. Each tool below opens the grid maker set up for one of those jobs. If you would rather read about the method first, the guides live under Learn.

The tools

One tool does the work; these pages open it set up for a particular job.

  • grid maker

    The tool itself. Drop in a photo, set the cell size in real centimetres or inches, drag the grid onto the features, export as PNG or PDF.

  • transfer drawing to canvas

    Print the matching empty grid onto your own sheet at true size, or use ruler strips for a stretched canvas that never sees a printer.

  • poster print grid

    Tile a reference across several sheets with cut lines and glue marks, for wall-sized work from a home printer.

  • composition overlays

    Rule of thirds, golden ratio, a draggable golden spiral and symmetry guides, laid over your reference and baked into the export.

  • compare drawing to reference

    A second workspace: overlay your finished drawing on the reference in nine diagnostic modes to see where the proportions drifted.
