One-Point Perspective: What It Is, When You Are In It, How to Draw It
One-point perspective is the view you have when you face a scene square on and look level: down a corridor, along a street, at a wall from the doorway. Every line that runs straight away from you converges on a single vanishing point on the horizon, at your eye level. Every line that runs across your view stays horizontal and every upright stays vertical, because those directions are parallel to the picture itself and a line parallel to the picture never converges. One point, one family of converging lines: that is the whole definition.
Where You Are Standing
The word to hold on to is facing. One-point perspective is not a simple version of two-point; it is what any scene looks like from one particular standpoint, with the front of the subject parallel to your face. Stand in the middle of a room and look straight at the far wall: the wall is a rectangle, the floor and ceiling run away from you to the point behind it, the side walls slope inward to the same point. Turn even slightly and the far wall stops being a rectangle, its sides begin to converge somewhere far to the left or right, and you have stepped into a two-point view.
Below, a house is built on the single point. Drag the point and the house follows. Move it left and you are standing left of centre, looking along the same wall; move it up and your eye level rises, so you see more of the roof and less of the underside of the eaves. The front face never changes shape. That is the signature of the view: one face stays a true rectangle, and only the depth changes.
Notice what does not move. The verticals stay vertical wherever you put the point, and the horizontals stay level. If your drawing needs a vertical to lean, or a horizontal to tilt, the scene is not one-point and no amount of adjustment will make it so.
What Converges and What Does Not
Take a box aligned with your view. It has three families of parallel edges. The edges running left to right are parallel to the picture, so they image as horizontals of constant direction. The edges running up and down are also parallel to the picture, so they stay vertical. Only the third family, the edges running from front to back, points away from you, and those converge. Where they meet is the vanishing point, and because they are level, it lies on the horizon, which is your eye level carried across the picture.
Two things follow. First, the point is always directly in front of you: it marks the direction you are looking, which is why Alberti called the ray through it the centric ray. Second, objects get smaller with distance along the same lines. A row of equal windows down a corridor shrinks towards the point, and the spacing between them shrinks too, faster than the eye expects. The first written account of all this is the floor construction in Alberti's treatise of 1435: a pavement of square tiles whose receding edges meet at a single point at eye level, with each row of tiles foreshortened towards it. It is a one-point construction, and the tiled floors of fifteenth-century painting are its direct descendants.
The Exercise: a Room on One Sheet
You need a sheet of Letter or A4 paper in landscape, a hard pencil (2H), a ruler and twenty minutes. Or print the one-point grid below and lay tracing paper over it.
- Rule the horizon 89 millimetres (3.5 inches) from the bottom edge on Letter, 85 millimetres on A4, right across the sheet. That is the eye level of a standing viewer in a room, a little below the middle of the picture.
- Mark the vanishing point on the horizon at the horizontal centre of the sheet. You are standing in the middle of the room, facing the far wall.
- Draw the far wall as a rectangle 80 millimetres wide and 50 millimetres high, centred on the point, its bottom edge 20 millimetres below the horizon. Its sides are vertical and its top and bottom are horizontal: it faces you.
- Rule from the point outward through each of the four corners of the rectangle to the edges of the sheet, lightly. These four lines are the edges where the side walls meet the floor and the ceiling. Check: each of them, extended back, must pass through the point. If one misses, the room is bent.
- Add a door in the left wall. Its two vertical edges are vertical. Its top and bottom edges converge on the point: rule them from the point outward. The door is a trapezoid, and the edge nearer you is taller.
- Add three floor tiles along the left wall, equal in depth. Mark the nearest tile 30 millimetres deep along the wall line; the next tiles are shallower. The check that they are equal is the diagonal: a line through the corners of the first tile, extended to the horizon, gives a second point, and lines from that point through the far corners fix the rest.
What you should see: one true rectangle at the back, every receding edge pointing at one spot, every upright still upright. Hold the sheet at arm's length and squint. If any receding line looks as though it would miss the point, it does, and it is the line the eye will catch first.
The Mistakes That Give It Away
- Two points where there should be one. The far wall's sides drawn converging even slightly. Either the scene is two-point and needs two points on the horizon, or the sides are vertical. There is no in between.
- A receding line that misses the point. A skirting board drawn by eye, a picture rail ruled from the wrong end. Every receding edge in the picture, however short, must pass through the single point when extended. Rule them from the point outward, not towards it.
- The point high in the picture. A viewer's eye is about 150 to 170 centimetres off the floor, a room is about 250 high, so the horizon crosses the far wall well below its top edge. A point near the ceiling means you are floating.
- Equal spacing in depth. Floor tiles, fence posts and windows drawn with equal gaps recede too slowly and the drawing goes flat. The gaps shrink; the diagonal fixes how fast.
- Objects turned to the viewer everywhere. A table in the room that is not aligned with the walls has its own two points, even inside a one-point room. One-point applies to the box you are facing, not to everything in it.

- Closer than the eye expects. Equal depths in the world shrink towards the point in the picture. To space equal tiles or posts, draw the first, run a diagonal through its corners to the horizon, and use that second point to fix the rest.
